An aspiring politician Fielding Pierce (Billy Crudup) falls in love with Sarah (Jennifer Connelly), a law student. However, when Sarah, whose life is devoted to helping others, is killed helping the Chilean resistance, Fielding's life is turned upside down. Nine years on he is suddenly filled with visions of her again and decides to bring her ghost back, putting all his aspirations of becoming a politician behind him.
