Satyajit Ray's final film charts the familial upheavals wrought by the arrival of a long lost relative at his niece's home. Anila has no recollection of her uncle Manomohan, and her husband suspects him of trying to make illegitimate claims on the family inheritance. Nevertheless, Manomohan is allowed to stay at their house, and soon strikes up a friendship with their son.
