Isabelle Adjani stars in François Truffaut's French drama based on a true story of desire, devotion and madness. Adele Hugo (Adjani), the daughter of writer Victor Hugo, develops a desire and obsession for military officer Lieutenant Albert Pinson (Bruce Robinson). When he transfers overseas, she follows him in order that they can be together, but when she writes to her parents revealing that she has married Pinson, despite their disapproval, Pinson responds telling them that Adele has invented the whole thing and that he will never marry her. What is real and what is in her mind?
