The second eight episodes of series one in this Cornish saga, first screened in the 1970's. Ross fights to make the defunct copper mine a success, only to be arrested and charged with inciting the villagers to loot a recent shipwreck. Demelza suspects George Warleggan of being involved. Facing trial, Ross finds that villagers are being paid to testify against him - possibly also the work of the wicked Warleggan. Ross is in very real financial trouble and there's no new supply of copper forthcoming from the mine. He becomes cold towards a despairing Demelza, and finds himself drawn to Elizabeth once more. Elizabeth, meanwhile, receives a marriage proposal from another, much to Ross's chagrin.
