Akira Kurosawa's classic Japanese drama follows a dying man as he regains his zest for life along with a desire to do some good after 30 years of working for the civil service. Kanji Watanabe (Takashi Shimura), Chief of the Citizen's Section of the Town Hall, learns that he has terminal cancer and has only months left to live. Seeking to make a difference, he rediscovers a passion for life and uses his influence to cut through bureaucratic red tape and facilitate the construction of a children's playground.
