Randolph Smiley (Robin Williams) plays a clown on one of the most successful children's television shows of the network Kidnet. But when he is dismissed from his beloved job for taking backhanders from parents wanting their kids on his show, he becomes increasingly mentally unhinged; and the target of his revenge fantasies is Sheldon Mopes (Edward Norton), the man who has replaced him (as a purple rhino called Smoochy) and soared to national popularity.
