Eventually he is caught and tried for mass murder. On its release the film found little favour with audiences, who were uneasy with its satirical, anti-war subtext. Later, in light of the popularity of films such as 'Dr Strangelove', Chaplin's film was re-assessed and is now considered to be one of his best.
