Collection of four war films directed by and starring Clint Eastwood. 'Flags of Our Fathers' (2006) is set in February 1945 when victory in Europe is finally within reach but the war in the Pacific rages on. The struggle for the island of Iwo Jima proves to be one of the most crucial battles of the campaign, but the six US servicemen who raise the American flag on Mount Suribachi struggle to escape their unwanted fame when they return home as heroes. In 'Letters from Iwo Jima' (2006) the same battle is seen from the Japanese point of view. The island of Iwo Jima stands between the American military force and the home islands of Japan. Therefore, the Imperial Japanese Army is desperate to prevent it from falling into American hands and providing a launching point for an invasion of Japan. General Tadamichi Kuribayashi (Ken Watanabe) is given command of the forces on the island and sets out to prepare for the imminent attack. General Kuribayashi, however, does not favour the rigid traditional approach recommended by his subordinates, and resentment and resistance fester among his staff. In 'Heartbreak Ridge' (1986) Eastwood stars as ageing, foul-mouthed Marine instructor Thomas Highway, who is given the job of training recruits for combat. He tackles problems in his private life and an increasingly bureaucratic Marine command while hurriedly preparing his charges for the invasion of Grenada. Finally, in 'Kelly's Heroes' (1970), set during World War Two in occupied France, a group of American soldiers led by Private Kelly (Eastwood) capture a German colonel. He reveals the location of a bank housing 14,000 bars of Nazi gold, which Kelly and his men set out to steal. The only problem is that the bank lies 30 miles behind enemy lines.
